Car noise guide: knocking vs. squealing vs. grinding
Compare common car noises by when they happen, what they may suggest, and how urgently they need a professional inspection.

Introduction
“My car is making a noise” becomes much more useful when you can name the character of the sound and the moment it appears. A knock under load points the conversation in a different direction than a squeal during braking or a grind while turning.
The comparison below is a triage guide. Cars transmit sound through the body, so the place you hear a noise may not be where it began. Use the chart to describe the symptom and decide how quickly to seek an inspection.

Knocking: listen for load and rhythm
A light ping during acceleration is different from a heavy mechanical knock that follows rpm. AAA’s automotive guidance lists fuel octane, low oil, and internal components among possible sources of engine knock. Because the severity range is wide, a new knock deserves a professional inspection rather than repeated hard acceleration to reproduce it.
Squealing: note which action triggers it
A startup squeal can direct attention toward a belt or pulley. A brake squeal is a separate system and may be a wear indicator, contamination, or moisture. AAA’s belt guide says squealing or chirping can relate to belt slip, wear, tension, or fluid contamination. The trigger matters as much as the tone.
Grinding: treat control-related changes seriously
Grinding during braking, steering, or wheel rotation can involve safety-critical parts. If it comes with reduced braking, pulling, steering changes, vibration, smoke, or heat from a wheel, stop safely and arrange help. Do not place a hand near a hot wheel, moving belt, fan, or running engine to locate a sound.
A description a mechanic can use
Use one sentence with four facts: sound + location + operating state + change over time. For example: “A high continuous squeal from the passenger side of the engine bay starts cold, becomes faster with rpm, and fades after two minutes.” A clean 20–30 second recording makes that description easier to compare.
